There’s mine a couple of weeks ago getting towed back to my house without a functioning transmission. Suppose I should get this piggy towed down to my buddy’s house and fix that.

so, you know the shift solenoids on these go, and they are easy to get to, right? Or do you think it is more terminal than that?

Volvo For Life! Who needs an automatic transmission (I suppose it is as it is failing on you) anyway.

This one died explosively. I had done a drain and fill on the transmission a week earlier, and this came out:

Kinja'd!!!

Knowing full well that I had a solid week of driving the car left, I let the new fluid slosh around in there and finish the thing off. One week to the day after the fluid replacement, the pinion started whining followed by an abrupt shudder and bang. As many quarts of Mobil 3309 that were left in the system spewed out all over the underside of the car and most of Manchester proper until it rolled to a stop at the corner of Orange and Elm.

ah too damn bad right there. So weird with the AWD Aisan Warners. I have had RWD ones and FWD ones go so long and take so much abuse - but the AWD ones just randomly are piles. Ugly, but actually isn’t too bad of a job to do

I had provisional approval from wife.gov to manual swap it, but that has since been taken off the table. She seems to think it would take longer than swapping another autobox in, but I seem to think otherwise.

by the time you got the ancillaries hooked up it would take longer, but at least you wouldnt have to worry about a used auto tranny biting it

Ouch. Hope it has a happy ending!

My 850R’s transmission is beginning to worry me a bit. It makes a quiet but noticeable whining noise when idling in gear or pulling away from a stop, and the transmission fluid has started going dark. My plan is to slowly acquire all the necessary bits for a manual swap, drive it until I have time to do the swap (or until the transmission blows up), and do the RMS at the same time.

note to self: don’t change transmission fluid on g/f’s car unless i want her to be buying a new car soon.

But seriously, sorry to hear that. G/f’s is the identical twin of this car. white xc70.

It’s a shame. I had a 2000 R and the transmission grenaded itself (I think you saw but I can’t remember)

Yeah, it was a fantastic looking car - shame that the powertrain couldn’t rise to the challenge. Though the 5-speed Aisin-Warner boxes were garbage from the start, not after 213k of New Hampshire driving.
